Progress Quest

Posted by lassam on Saturday, October 28

I’ve finally found a MMORPG that I like! Progress Quest!

Try it, it’s free, and not too time-consuming. You probably won’t be able to tackle it with the dedication that I have, but that’s your problem.

If you care to look me up, I’m on server Oobag- I’m “Persnicket”, the Lv 1. Demicanadian Runeloremaster.

Y’know what’s fun?

Posted by lassam on Wednesday, October 25

Triple-booting WinXP, Ubuntu, Fedora Core, (and Windows Recovery). I got to make 9 partitions!
The Fedora version of GRUB, however, has this ugly “FEDORA!” splash page that needs to be changed. It should say something else, like ‘MOVIESET!” or “Go Team Venture!”

Also, Fedora doesn’t have dpkg-configure xorg-xserver (or xserver-xorg or something). I can’t seem to get Fedora to display in anything higher than 800×600, which makes me claustrophobic.
Maybe it just doesn’t have the built-in support for the video card, or something.
I even tried setting the HorizSync and VertRefresh, driver, and display modes in xorg.conf. Nothin’. It worked in Ubuntu on my laptop (which has some really wacky HorizSync & VertRefresh requirements, requiring a hasty visit to ‘ye Toshiba’ to find)

I *could* solve the problem, but I have some actual *WORK* to do (Wait for our tech-support @ Radiant to phone back and tell us why our FTP server is closed for business, install Flash Media Server on Fedora, perhaps also Ubuntu for shits n’ giggles, cure cancer, etc..)

Make The Impossible Possibler.

Posted by lassam on Tuesday, October 17

We need a nice server on a nice pipe with a sysadmin attached.
What we have is me. They’ve given me 12 days.
(My response was “That’s fuckin’ impossible”. Followed by “What do we need to do to make it possible?” “Hire a good Network guy. They’re expensive, but worth it. Then, it might be possible” “Okay, hire a good sysadmin guy. Tell us who and how much.” “That alone will take more than 12 days” “Look, we need this done by the end of the month. We’re gonna have a lot of people coming to our site for this Battle in Seattle thing, and we have to be able to accomodate them all.” “Look, do you really think we are going to have to deal with that many people? Nobody even really cares about Charlize Theron” )

My ’solution’ is to hunt for a really talented sysadmin (we need SOMEBODY really talented working at MovieSet eventually) and while we’re hunting, just get a dedicated Flash Streaming Server (2) server with Influxis for a grand a month or whatever it costs. “We’ll burn through a terabyte in a few days” my ass. I doubt we’ll even need 500Gb for the first month. And then, $1/Gb can’t hurt us too much- still cheaper than buying 2 servers + 2 FMS2 licenses + colocation + setup….

I just can’t convince anybody that my solution is a good one.  Well, at least I can’t convince Chris of that.

Which brings me to the question: Where can I find a talented Networkjerk? Anybody good at pretending to be a master (or actually a master) can probably make some decent dough for a temporary basis (call it ‘contract work’).
The dark side calls you.. *oooOOooo*

CMPT 3** 1071 – Google Calendar’d

Posted by lassam on Monday, October 16

To ease the layout of courses in respect to the fourth dimension, I’ve laid them out in a google calendar.

This is the entire set of courses from CMPT 300 – 399, excluding 320 becuase 320 does not really deserve to be marked with the CMPT tag.

Should you want to contibute, comment on your course recommendations/avoids and your professor recommendations/avoids.

**Edit** Allen noted that the calendar wasn’t public. I had set it to public, but there was a buggy.. thing.  With the bugginess. It had something to do with my signing out of Google elsewhere.
**Edit** Google Calendar doesn’t allow common plebians to comment on other person’s calendars.
If you have comments, send ‘em to me and I’ll implement ‘em or give you calendar access.

I love Illustrator.

Posted by lassam on Saturday, October 14

This morning, I hated illustrator. Hated it. So ornery and difficult to use and cranky.
But then I thought I’d spend some time with it, get to know it, maybe learn a few things.

And you know what? It’s really quite nice. Of course, I’ve been working for about 3 hours on one drawing- and it’s far from done. But I’m assuming that when I become more conversant with Illustrator, I can streamline the process. I like the way it turns out. Yays!

But why does she only have one arm, Curtis?
It’s not done yet, foolish mortal!

Bass?

Posted by lassam on Thursday, October 12

Amir: We should jam sometime.
Clay: Well, I’d have to fix up my bass
Amir: What happened to your bass?
Curtis: It’s belong to us!
Chris: Fuck off, Curtis.

Dan’s keyboard endangered

Posted by lassam on Thursday, October 12

Dan says:
Good morning fellow wage slave
Curtis – says:
Hup hup, co-peon!
Dan says:
We need a song
Dan says:
Like the seven dwarves, only more dissonant with defeatism
Curtis – says:
The Seven Dwarves, but inspired by Office Space. ^_^
Dan says:
No, inspired by Sartre’s distaste for the human condition
Curtis – says:
Snow White and the Existentialist Dilemma
Dan says:
That needs to be made a comic
Dan says:
I almost spilled coffee all over my fancy schmancy keyboard
